Wrought Iron Information

The substance called Wrought iron is a very pure form of commercial iron. The reason for this is that it has a very small carbon content. It has appealing properties in that it is tough, malleable, ductile and easy to weld. It is known as "bar iron" if it is found in the form of a bar. This substance has been used for thousands of years, and represents the "iron" that is referred to throughout history.

Wrought iron is produced by a method known as a bloomery. Charcoal-heated smelters are used where the ore is poured and then covered with a thin layer of charcoal. Air is blown onto the charcoal after lighting it on fire. The heat produced can melt the ore. This causes the ore to be reduced and mixing with the charcoal to release carbon dioxide. This way little carbon entered the iron directly during the manufacture of the substance. The result is wrought iron.

Wrought iron products usually refer to mild steel products which are also described as ornamental iron work.
